    Hello everybody,

My name is Richard, I’m 33 and live on the West Sussex/Hampshire border. I’m a new member and look forward chatting to you and meeting you in the future. I’m also very inexperienced in restorations, a mechanical novice and wannabe master craftsman – however, I’ve decided to try to restore my Dad’s old Stoic Mk1. It’s been redundant for around 20-25 years, just sitting in a shed and it breaks my heart every time I see it looking so sad. Expect me to be asking a lot of questions, please bear with me and apologies in advance if any of them are dumbfoundingly stupid.

So, here are some pics of it on Monday night and some of the progress made. I’ve already ordered the obvious parts I’ll need eg diaphragm, engine stickers, service items etc and will probably be ordering new parts daily as they appear necessary.

However, I am really struggling to find some bits and wonder if anybody knows of a Stoic specialist anywhere in the world who might be able to help?

Thanks in advance and best wishes,

    Richard

Welcome to the Forum, Richard. You have a Briggs and Stratton engine there, and it’s fairly easy to find manuals on their website. parts are pretty well available as well. This link will help you get a manual. Paul Mackellow has a good knowledge of Landmaster machines and may be able to help with the Stoic.

    Welcome Richard

For parts try John Cruse at The Mower Centre in Hailsham, 01323 842477, he may be able to help and advise on the parts you are after.

Good luck with your restoration !!

    Afternoon Gents,

Thanks for your welcome and help.

I’ll give John a call once I have a complete list of the bits I’ll need to complete the job – otherwise I’ll be calling him every day and I’ll end up being a pest!

I has a slight problem a couple of nights ago – taking one of the front wheels off and discovered the split pin had rusted in there good and proper. Started drilling it out carefully then the drill bit snapped off, not leaving enough to grip onto to pull it out again.

I’ll try to punch it out over the weekend. I’ll update with pics as I go along.

Some parts have already started arriving in dribs and drabs – gasket set, spark plug, diaphragm kit, air filter, fuel cap and such like. Blades, muffler and carb screw are on order and due in a couple of weeks from the states, along with a B&S sticker set.

Anyway, here’s a pic from Wed night after another hour or so stripping it down.

    Bye for now,

    Richard

    Hi everyone,

So I’m making progress, despite a few set backs.

Here’s some updated pics of how things are going.

Firstly, some more pics of the stripdown.

The blades weren’t in great shape so I’ve rubbed down and re painted the disc. New blades are on order, expected to arrive next week sometime.

As for the engine….well, I have no idea how it ran the last time it did (maybe 20 years ago)! It was heavily coked up and covered in carbon deposits, it took some real work to clean up. The head isn’t finished hyst yet but getting there as you can see from the pictures.

I might pay to hone the cylinder and put some rings in

It might or you might? That would be very kind will-haggle!

Joking. Yes, it certainly needs more work than I originally thought. If I’d known, I might not have started this project so I’m pleased I didn’t. From memory the last time the machine was turned off was due to the heavy vibration caused by the missing blade and subsequent lack of balance, not because the engine was in need of work.

    Amazing it still ran.

With a huge thanks to Dan at Liss Garden machinery, I’m confident the engine will run once its been put back together! Lastnight, we reseated the valves, cleaned and ground back the head to remove the effects of warping, cleaned and adjusted the points etc. Above are pictures of how i found the engine, below are pictures of it now – quite a considerable difference!

I’ve also started painting some components.

    Hello there,
Hoping that you now have a working mower I am posting this to ask if you can give me details of the drive belt on your machine? Mine has an Optibelt but the figures on the belt are worn away and the belt is so damaged it’s impossible to say what width/length it was!
    Hope you can help,
    J

Measure the diameter of the two pulley wheels and the centre to centre of the shafts ,allow 1/2″for the clutch give these figures to your belt supplier and he should be able to supply.

    Andy.

I’m guessing that Charlie meant that the person who wrote the original post is no longer an active member, and so Merry-Tiller’s question to him is unlikely to get a reply.

It doesn’t stop anyone else from answering him, though.
