I have been given a merry tiller which I plan to get going and then use and perhaps lightly restore. It has a briggs and stratton engine.

1/. There is an odd electrical wire coming from rear of engine. Someone has added a connector and extended length of wire to this but it goes nowhere and is loose. What is this? Is it something to short out ignition and thus stop engine perhaps? Any ideas?

2/. I attach a photograph of serial number plate. Can anyone tell me exact model and age from this?

You can date a briggs engine from the serial number stamped on the cowling. Will give a month and year.
Without seeing it, not sure on the wire, could be an earth off the coil pack.

Thanks. I’ll try to take a phot of where the wire comes out of the engine and see if I can find a serial number on the engine itself.

    I found information on B&S 5Hp Coils,
Depending which coil is fitted that it might indicate a wire for a kill switch?
dont know if this matches your situation or not.

    Mike.
